Frequently Asked Questions

Is it for me?…

Shouldn’t we already know how to run?

“Running is simple, but it’s not easy!”

Running is a cross lateral movement. We learn cross lateral movements from a young age when we begin to crawl; this progresses onto walking and then running. Running technique however is rarely addressed. Yes, running is simple but it’s not always as easy as placing one foot in front of the other.

Running technique is rarely taught and, along with, previous injuries, poor pattern development or movement restrictions it can lead to inefficient biomechanics. This could ultimately lead to injury or inefficient technique inhibiting performance.

As an already experienced runner what can The Running School do for me?

Nobody is perfect! The Running School has worked with athletes of all levels right up to international level.

The gains in PBs for more experienced athletes are inevitably going to be relatively smaller than those for a beginner but as experienced athletes know even small gains can still make the difference between getting on the podium or not.

More importantly even for those currently injury free the comprehensive screening undertaken reduces the possibility of injury later in your career particularly if you are considering changing your training regime (e.g. increasing distance).

Is it possible to change technique?

Of course! Whether you’re a complete beginner or elite athlete technique can be changed. As with any other skills, running technique can be taught at any age.

There a number of different running and muscle activation exercises which are given throughout the programme to ensure the technique taught becomes part of your revised movement pattern. By applying these during the sessions and during your own practice, you will see your technique progress through the course.

What will I do?…

Initially, a running biomechanical assessment.

Using video analysis we identify any areas, which can be improved in order to reduce injury risk or improve performance (or both!).

Using a movement screen any specific areas of weakness are also identified, which helps to build an individual strength programme in which works alongside the six-week programme.

Certain things we address within your running style include: Posture, Foot strike, Landing position, Cadence, Alignment and Stability.

Why is the programme six sessions?

It takes 6-8 weeks to make any movement change to start to feel natural. The six sessions allows you to work alongside your coach towards your goals and objectives, enabling you to make the full adaptations to the new running technique.

At the end of each session we also give you homework to encourage you to try the new techniques and exercises between sessions which helps speed up the learning process.

Are the sessions treadmill based?

The majority of the sessions are based on the treadmill. This allows focused learning to the technique and allows you to get the best out of the six sessions. We do however go outside on both road and grass at the end of certain sessions to see the technique. The technique transfers well to outside and the sessions include different speeds and incline, which challenges each individual.

Am I fit enough?…

How fit do I need to be?

We work with a wide variety of abilities; but each individual is an athlete! Each session is adapted individually and all we ask is that you’re committed to each session. Over the 6 weeks you’ll see your fitness develop.

I’ve had a long standing injury that once I return back to running it comes back again, is this for me?

Yes! Inefficient running biomechanics can increase the risk of injury. If your running biomechanics is placing specific stresses onto certain areas of your body if this is not addressed then it could potentially be a causing factor as to why the injury keeps returning.

A number of patients that come and see us have had long standing injuries. We find that with specific rehabilitation which goes together with changing there biomechanics it can help to reduce the stress therefore the injury.

What else does the Running School offer that may help me?…

What are Dynamic Movement Skills (DMS)?

DMS is a training methodology in which is used to refine and improve gross motor skills, speed and balance. Using multi-directional movements it enables the improvement of quickness, explosiveness and coordination.

DMS is used within our Kids Running packages to incorporate further movement development and it links directly with numerous multi-directional sports. It incorporates a series of game related movements in order to allow motor skill and movement development fun!

I’ve noticed that my child doesn’t move well, is something wrong?

Movement development can differ from children and some just may need slightly more focus. Our biggest joy is seeing children moving and enjoying sport; no matter what the ability. We work closely with children from the age of six to aid with movement development and running ability.

Is The Running School just about running in a straight line?

Absolutely not! The principal of neural re-education applies to all forms of exercise where co-ordination is required. Running technique sessions improve straight line speed while our Dynamic Movement Skills sessions are designed to improve the multidirectional speed to enhance performance in individual and team sports including tennis; rugby, football, hockey etc.
